Chamonix is that rare breed of resorts: it attracts as many visitors in summer as in winter. Considered the Mecca of alpine mountaineering and rockclimbing, famous peaks and routes dominate its valley. Routes up mountains such as les Grandes Jorasses, le Mont Blanc, les Drus, all made famous by British climbers in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Chamonix is not restricted to those thrill-seeking few however, and spectacular views can be enjoyed whilst hiking, mountain-biking, paragliding, playing tennis, or simply riding the famous Aiguille du Midi cablecar to a culminating height of 3842m (13500 ft.).
